The MK Party is mourning the death of its KwaZulu-Natal regional organiser, Lastborn Shazi, following a fatal shooting.
Shazi was reportedly gunned down at his home in Umzumbe on Monday night, 2 November. His killing comes shortly before South Africa’s highly anticipated local government elections on Wednesday, 4 November.
MK PARTY DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO SHAZI’S MURDER
MK Party spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Mkhuseli Mlengane, expressed deep sadness over Shazi’s death.
He described the incident as a devastating loss for the party, his relatives, friends and the wider community.
Furthermore, Mlengane called on the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murder.
He also demanded that investigators identify those responsible and bring everyone involved to justice. This includes individuals who may have planned or facilitated the attack.
Mlengane highlighted the province’s long history of political violence. He warned that continued killings required urgent intervention from law enforcement.
“KwaZulu-Natal has a painful history of political killings. The continued loss of lives through violence is a serious concern that demands decisive action from law enforcement authorities. No individuals should lose their life because of their political involvement or organisational responsibilities,” Mlengane said.

MK PARTY URGES SUPPORTERS AGAINST SPECULATION
Meanwhile, the MK Party has appealed for calm among its members and supporters following the killing.
The organisation urged its structures to exercise restraint while authorities investigate the incident.
It also cautioned members against spreading unconfirmed reports or making accusations that could interfere with investigations.
“Members are urged not to engage in speculation, spread unverified information or make allegations that could compromise the investigation and inflame tensions. We must allow the truth to emerge through a proper investigative process and ensure that justice takes its course,” Mlengane said.
The party also confirmed that it would announce Shazi’s memorial service and funeral arrangements later.
However, officials will first consult his family before communicating the details.
