Du Noon fire: At least 20 shacks destroyed

Du Noon fire: At least 20 shacks destroyed! A devastating fire swept through the informal settlement of Du Noon on Tuesday night, razing twenty shacks and injuring a City of Cape Town firefighter who responded to the scene.

The fire broke out shortly after 8 p.m., and it took several hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighter Injured During Response

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed the firefighter’s injury, noting that the individual sustained injuries while working to contain the blaze in challenging conditions.

“Our firefighters worked through the night to control the fire. Unfortunately, one of our team members was injured during the operation,” Carelse stated. The injured firefighter has since received medical attention, though the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

Hours of Effort to Contain the Blaze

The fire demanded hours of concentrated effort by the City’s fire and rescue teams as they battled to prevent further destruction in Du Noon, a densely populated area that houses many informal dwellings.

Carelse indicated that “several hours were required to bring the blaze under control, given the proximity of structures and the difficult conditions on the ground.”

Impact and Initial Assessments

While the extent of the fire’s impact is still under assessment, preliminary reports indicate that at least twenty informal dwellings and one formal house were destroyed.

The total number of people affected is still unclear, as Disaster Risk Management teams are expected to complete their evaluations to determine the final figures and assist those displaced.

“Initial estimates are that 20 informal dwellings and one formal dwelling were destroyed. Final figures will be confirmed following assessments by Disaster Risk Management,” Carelse added. Community members in the affected areas await further support as they begin the challenging process of rebuilding.

Ongoing Support and Safety Precautions

Following this incident, City officials and relief organizations are preparing to provide essential assistance to affected residents. Such aid includes temporary shelter, food, and clothing for those who have lost their homes and belongings.

The Du Noon fire highlights the ongoing risks of fires in informal settlements, where homes are often built close together, with limited access to water and firefighting equipment.
