Karate Legend Sensei Mugove Muhambi Dies in Borrowdale Road Accident

The man who tragically died in a head-on collision along Borrowdale Road on Saturday morning, 17 May, has been identified as popular Zimbabwean karateka and fitness trainer, Sensei Mugove Muhambi.

According to The Herald, Sensei Mugo was behind the wheel of a Honda Fit when the accident happened near St George’s College around 7 am. He died on the spot. An eyewitness who spoke to ZBC said the Honda Fit was speeding when it suddenly veered into the oncoming lane and smashed into a Toyota GD6.

Sensei Mugo came from a large family of seven, including five brothers who had a passion for athletics. His older brother, the late Elson Muhambi, was a professional boxer with Mau Mau Boxing.

Over the years, Sensei Mugo made a name for himself both on and off the mat. In 2016, he was elected Vice President of the Zimbabwe Karate Union. He began his martial arts journey in primary school, learning Seido Kan under Shihan Misheck Chiwayo, before switching to the more intense, full-contact Kyokushin style with Shihan Tendayi Marange.

He became a fourth Dan black belt and branch chief in Kyokushin Kan, winning numerous medals and trophies. He also dabbled in acting, appearing as “Zola” in a ZBC drama.

Zimbabwe Mourns Karateka’s Death

News of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief from across the country. Prominent lawyer Advocate Fadzayi Mahere posted a gym photo with Sensei Mugo, prompting heartfelt tributes in the comments.

Many remembered him as a positive, driven and humble figure who inspired those around him with his strength and spirit.
