Even with a huge CAF Champions League final ahead, Mamelodi Sundowns didn’t let the pressure kill the party mood. On Wednesday, 28 May, coach Miguel Cardoso and fullback Divine Lunga celebrated their birthdays — mid-air, on the team’s flight to Cairo.
The squad made a quick fuel stop in Rwanda, where they popped bottles and shared some champagne to honour the two birthday stars. Cardoso captured the moment on Instagram, raising a glass alongside Zimbabwean international Lunga.
“Yesterday, I celebrated a special birthday! All day flight from Johannesburg to Cairo to play the second leg of the CAF Champions League final.
“On the stop for fuel in Rwanda, we took time to celebrate together with Divine Lunga and share love with everybody on board!” wrote Cardoso in his IG post of their mile-high birthday party.
Cardoso’s post featured a snap of him and the Zimbabwe international holding a glass of champagne, toasting to doing another lap around the sun.
“Far from my family but with family! Thank you for all the messages and best wishes that I received. [It is] Wonderful to feel love. Let’s live and celebrate life every day!” added Cardoso.

The birthday cheers brought a little lightness to an intense trip as Sundowns prepare to fight for glory in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final.
Mamelodi Sundowns have a challenging mission ahead as they head to Cairo for the second leg of the CAF Champions League final against Egypt’s Pyramids FC this Sunday.
Last Saturday’s first leg ended in a tense 1-1 draw after Sundowns conceded a late goal. Now, to lift their second CAF CL trophy, coach Miguel Cardoso’s side must either win outright or draw with at least two goals apiece. A 1-1 draw will push the match into penalties.
