Scott Sakupwanya & SA baddie Thuli Phongolo finally speak on their alleged “relationship”
South African actress and influencer Thuli Phongolo and Zimbabwean businessman and MP Scott Kupa Sakupwanya have finally spoken out on viral rumours that the two are dating.
The alleged relationship, which trended after South African gossip commentator Musa Khawula tweeted that the pair were now an item, has sparked a wave of online chatter. But both parties have now come forward — and they’re setting the record straight.
“I am not dating Scott Kupa. The end.”
Taking to her Instagram stories, Thuli Phongolo was blunt.
“Let me indulge you for a sec…
“You guys need to stop trying to link me to people I wouldn’t even consider dating…
“I am not dating Scott Kupa. The end.”
The statement quickly went viral, with fans flooding her comments in support, confusion, and memes.
The speculation had been fuelled by a tweet from entertainment blogger and rabble rouser Musa Khawula, who wrote:
“Thuli Phongolo finds love at the arms of Scott Kupa. This comes after Thuli Phongolo dumping her abusive ex-boyfriend DJ Maphorisa.
“Scott Kupa who is a businessman and a ZANU PF member of parliament recently purchased a Lamborghini for his new beau Thuli Phongolo.”
“Scott Kupa had previously dated Mihlali Ndamase before getting it on with Thuli Phongolo.”
But Thuli’s statement made it clear she was not impressed.
Scott Sakupwanya also denies relationship via media team
Meanwhile, Sakupwanya responded through a statement released by his publicists at Lhalys Media LLC.
“On behalf of our esteemed client, Honourable Scott Sakupwanya, we clarify that recent reports alleging relationships with certain individuals are entirely false, as he has not met these individuals and has no intention of doing so.
His substantial Corporate Social Investment budget is exclusively dedicated to advancing youth development initiatives in Zimbabwe, with no funds allocated to any groups or activities that do not support the nation’s progress.”
Sakupwanya, a businessman and sitting Member of Parliament, was prominently featured in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia documentary series in 2023. The investigative exposé alleged the existence of a gold smuggling and money laundering network involving politically connected individuals in Zimbabwe.
While Sakupwanya has not been charged with any crime, the Gold Mafia links have remained part of his public profile and often trend in association with his name.
His lifestyle — including flashy cars, designer suits, and diamond-encrusted watches — has continued to attract both fans and critics. This time, it was the alleged romance with Phongolo that triggered headlines across social media.
“This is a downgrade?”
Reactions to the rumours have also been mixed online. Some users were sceptical about the alleged pairing, while others were quick to dismiss it entirely. One comment from @incontroZA sparked attention:
“Aowa Thuli, this is a downgrade… From The Leonardo to the street stalls downstairs?”
The comments were in reference to Thuli’s rumoured former residence at Johannesburg’s luxury Leonardo building, compared to claims about Sakupwanya’s Harare lifestyle.
As of 31 May 2025, both Thuli Phongolo and Scott Sakupwanya remain clear: there is no relationship between them. The Lamborghini? Also denied. The dinner dates? Never happened.
Whether fans will accept the denials remains to be seen — but for now, both stars have said their piece.
