Kaizer Chiefs Star Itu Khune Backs Mamelodi Sundowns Footballer for Top 2024/25 PSL Award
Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has revealed his choice for the 2024/25 Player of the Season.
He has backed Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa for the prestigious award.
In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, the veteran goalkeeper said he had made his mind up early in the season—and despite the strong performances from other top players, his decision has not wavered.
“I already have my Player of the Season. I chose him very early, and even now, at the end of the campaign, he still has my vote. Lucas Ribeiro Costa.”
Consistency and Teamwork Set Ribeiro Apart
Ribeiro Costa has been instrumental in Sundowns’ league-winning campaign, contributing heavily with goals and assists. Khune praised the Brazilian attacker not only for his consistency but also for his selflessness on the pitch.
“He’s been the most consistent when it comes to goalscoring,” Khune explained. “But what I really like about him is that he is unselfish. He plays for the team, not just for himself.”
The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper highlighted Ribeiro’s ability to balance individual brilliance with team contribution, something he believes sets the 26-year-old apart from other top performers this season.
Praise Amidst Tough Competition
Khune acknowledged that other forwards such as Iqraam Rayners and Peter Shalulile also had standout seasons. However, he believes Ribeiro Costa’s blend of scoring and playmaking makes him the standout choice.
“People say strikers should be selfish in front of goal, but Ribeiro knows when to pass. He shares the glory with his teammates.
That is why at one point he and Rayners were tied on goals. I remember the Magesi game clearly—he scored two goals and went ahead. Even Shalulile has been brilliant, but Ribeiro gets my vote,” said Khune.
A Complete Debut Season
Ribeiro Costa’s debut season in South African football has clearly left a strong impression—not just on fans, but on his rivals as well.
“For me, he’s been the most complete player this season,” Khune concluded. “My vote goes to Lucas Ribeiro Costa. Simple as that.”
Khune’s praise is notable, particularly as it comes from a veteran of a rival club, underscoring the impact Ribeiro Costa has made in his first PSL season.
