Zimbabwe Government Announces Compensation Plan for Gukurahundi Victims

The Zimbabwe Government has announced that they are planning to compensate Gukurahundi victims.

Zimbabwe’s National Chiefs Council has revealed that community hearings for Gukurahundi victims will start on  26 June, with the government prepared to provide compensation to affected individuals.

Traditional Leaders Help In Reconciliation Process

The announcement follows preparations by traditional leaders across Matabeleland, who recently concluded a ten-day awareness campaign (May 27-June 5) to inform communities about the upcoming hearings. Chief Fortune Charumbira, Vice President of the National Chiefs Council, confirmed the developments during a Bulawayo press conference.

“We’ve spent four years preparing for this critical phase of national healing,” stated Chief Charumbira, representing Council President Chief Mtshane Khumalo. “President Mnangagwa has opened the door for dialogue, and we encourage all affected citizens to participate through their local traditional leaders.”

The hearings will be conducted in a private format to protect participants’ confidentiality. Each session will feature a presiding chief with a panel of 13 community representatives. Religious leaders, elders, women, and youth and two professional rapporteurs documenting proceedings will also be included. A community-based chancellor providing cultural guidance also allows part of the audience into the hearing.

“These are not public forums,” emphasized Chief Charumbira. “Victims may bring immediate family members, but proceedings will remain confidential to encourage open participation.”

The National Chiefs Council has established a dedicated Command Centre at Bulawayo’s First Mutual Building to coordinate the nationwide initiative. Approved recording equipment, including laptops, audio devices, and cameras, will be secured by participating chiefs.
