Watch: Proteas Captain Temba Bavuma And Son’s Viral Moment Is The Joy Cricket Fans Needed

A heartwarming video of Proteas captain Temba Bavuma bonding with his toddler son at Lord’s Cricket Ground is winning hearts across the world. The sweet father-son interaction came shortly after South Africa clinched a historic five-wicket victory over Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final.

A hat, a mace, and a memory to last a lifetime

In the now-viral clip, Bavuma is seen walking hand-in-hand with his young son before placing his iconic baggy green Test cap on the boy’s head. The child responds with delight, tottering around proudly in his father’s cap.

Moments later, Bavuma hands over the ICC WTC mace to his son, gently placing it in his small outstretched arms. The two stroll across the hallowed turf of Lord’s with the mace, creating what many online are calling “the picture of the tournament”.

“It was the cutest thing I’ve seen all week,” one fan wrote on social media.
“That boy is going to remember that forever. What a moment,” added another.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), which captured and shared the video, noted that the clip had gone viral within hours, with millions of views and shares worldwide.

“We have worked hard for this moment” – Bavuma

Speaking after the final, Temba Bavuma reflected on the team’s victory and the emotion behind it.

“It has been a special couple of days,” Bavuma said.
“At some point, it felt like we were back in South Africa with all the support in the stands. We have prepared hard for this, we have worked hard for this moment.”

The Proteas captain went on to describe how much the win meant to his team and the country.

“We have been wanting this as a team. We’ve gone through heartache, we’ve seen the disappointment of the past. The sun is on us at the moment. Hopefully, this is one of many.”

He praised Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram for their key roles in the final.

“KG came into the game with controversy behind him, but like a champion he did what he needed to do. And Aiden—some questioned why he was in the team—but he showed character. That’s what we value.”

Cummins admits missed chances for Australia

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins was gracious in defeat, acknowledging that his side let a good position slip.

“Things can change quickly, but it was a bridge too far,” Cummins admitted.
“Few things we didn’t do right. Didn’t bat out the opposition after a decent first-innings lead.”

He also gave credit to South Africa’s fourth-innings chase.

“SA didn’t give us a chance. Lyon bowled well but couldn’t get a wicket. We gave everything we had.”

The Aussies had started strong, dismissing South Africa for 138 in the first innings and gaining a 74-run lead. But it was South Africa who held their nerve when it mattered most.

A win to unite a nation

For South Africa, the victory is more than just a cricket title. It ends a 27-year wait since their last ICC trophy and signals a new chapter.

“Here’s an opportunity for us, as divided as we are at times, to forget all of that, to rejoice in this moment and just be one,” Bavuma added.

The scenes at Lord’s—victory on the field and love off it—have provided one of cricket’s most touching moments. As Bavuma’s son held the mace, it wasn’t just about a win. It was about legacy.
