A Widow is seeking justice following her husband’s death in police custody after an officer brutally beat him.
The grieving family of Blessed Believe Juruvenge, who died after alleged torture at Ruwa Police Station, has formally notified Zimbabwean authorities of their intention to pursue legal compensation.
Mercy Madenyika, Juruvenge’s widow, along with her mother-in-law, Elipa Jimu, and sister-in-law, Mellisa Manyepa, have engaged legal representation through Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

Court documents reveal that Manyepa is seeking additional compensation for physical injuries and emotional distress suffered during her own alleged assault by the accused officer, Prince Ndavambi, who currently faces murder charges.

Legal counsel Paidamoyo Saurombe stated that Manyepa continues to experience persistent leg pain from the incident. The deceased reportedly supported three dependents through multiple jobs, including work as a driver at Bakers Inn, welding jobs, and operating a small retail shop.
With Juruvenge’s death, the family has lost their primary source of income. Compounding the tragedy, Madenyika is currently expecting a child.
Psychological Trauma and Constitutional Violations Cited
The family’s legal notice emphasises the severe emotional impact of Juruvenge’s death, noting they are receiving professional psychological support. The court filing alleges Ndavambi made threats indicating premeditation, telling Manyepa her brother “was going to be put into a coffin” during the assault.
Legal arguments cite violations of Section 219(1)(c) of Zimbabwe’s constitution, which mandates police protection of citizens’ lives. The notice invokes both the State Liabilities Act and Section 70 of the Police Act as grounds for the impending lawsuit.
