Jacob Zuma Takes Ramaphosa And ANC To Court Over Expulsion

South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma has taken Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC to court after he was expelled from the party.

In a dramatic political escalation, former South African president Jacob Zuma has initiated legal proceedings against current president Cyril Ramaphosa and the African National Congress (ANC), challenging his controversial removal from the party.

MK Party Denounces ANC’s Disciplinary Process

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, Zuma’s current political home, issued a scathing statement condemning the ANC’s disciplinary actions as “a sham judicial process.” This legal move comes after months of tension following Zuma’s December 2023 formation of the MK Party, which violated ANC regulations prohibiting members from establishing rival political organizations.

Zuma, whose ANC membership spanned decades, maintains that his connection to the party’s liberation-era values remains unbroken.

“My affiliation with the true ANC – the party of Luthuli, Tambo, and Mandela – cannot be severed by those who’ve betrayed our principles,” the former president asserted through his party’s communication channels.

The MK Party’s statement draws a direct line between Zuma’s ousting and the ANC’s recent electoral defeat in May 2024, suggesting the leadership’s alleged compromises led to the party’s downfall. The timing of the court filing on Freedom Charter Day appears deliberately symbolic, highlighting what Zuma’s camp views as the ANC’s abandonment of its foundational principles.

Coalition Government Draws Fire

The legal challenge intensifies existing political fractures, with the MK Party particularly critical of the ANC’s decision to form a Government of National Unity with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus. Zuma’s supporters characterize these alliances as evidence of ideological betrayal.

Dual Membership Controversy

In a notable twist, the MK Party revealed its constitution permits dual membership under exceptional circumstances, leaving open the possibility of Zuma’s potential return to the ANC fold should his legal challenge succeed.

“Restoring Zuma’s membership would advance the crucial unification of black political movements in our ongoing liberation struggle,” the statement concluded.
