More than 1,500 residential stands are taking shape in Bulawayo under the Munhumutapa National Youth Housing Scheme.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched the housing programme in Masvingo in 2024.
Now, the Government has expanded the initiative to Bulawayo as part of its inclusive development agenda.
The new project is underway at Valindre through a public-private partnership.
Enock Construction and Earth Moving Equipment is partnering with the Government on the development.
Valindre housing project gathers pace
Project Manager Thabani Ndlovu said construction had progressed significantly during the first phase.
He confirmed that workers had also started advancing the second and third phases.
“We are servicing over 1 500 stands for the Munhumutapa National Youth Housing Scheme, a Presidential Housing Scheme. As you can see, phase one is almost complete. We are now working on phases two and three. We have managed to put in roads and sewer, and we have even gone an extra mile and electrified the area. As you can see, the streetlights are working,” he said.
The initial phase covers 400 stands and is now approaching completion.
Meanwhile, young residents have welcomed the development and praised the Government’s housing initiative.
One beneficiary said the project reflected the Government’s commitment to young people.
“We are happy that the Second Republic is a people-centred Government. It really is walking the talk in fulfilling its promises. As young people, we are very happy with the policies of the Second Republic. It just shows that the Second Republic, led by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is not just a talking Government,” the young person said.
Government highlights benefits for young people
Nkulumane MP Freedom Murechu also welcomed the progress at the new residential area.
He said the development showed that authorities were responding to young people’s housing needs.
“A lot has been done here on site to develop these stands. We want to thank our listening President. Remember, our parents used to get stands at cheaper prices and they would pay in instalments. So today we are happy that our Second Republic is affording us the very same opportunity,” he said.
Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube also backed the project.
She said affordable housing could strengthen both dignity and economic wellbeing among young people.
“Our expectation is for young people to have access to decent and affordable housing, and by giving them access to decent housing, it also promotes their dignity. We want to thank the President for prioritising the welfare of young people,” she said.
The Valindre development will provide both medium-density and high-density residential stands.
Phase one contains 400 stands, while phase two will deliver another 500 stands.
Furthermore, phase three will add 700 additional stands to the development.
Overall, the project will provide more than 1,500 residential stands for young people in Bulawayo.
