Kasukuwere Hits Back at Tagwirei, Accuses Him of Plotting Against Mnangagwa
The war of words between former Zanu PF heavyweight Saviour Kasukuwere and fuel mogul Kudakwashe Tagwirei has escalated, with Kasukuwere accusing Tagwirei of corruption and even of trying to take over from President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
It all started during a business event in Bulawayo this week, where Tagwirei — the Sakunda Holdings boss — publicly attacked Kasukuwere, calling him “one of the most corrupt people I know.”
Kasukuwere didn’t take long to respond. In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), he hit back by suggesting Tagwirei is a fraud hiding behind political ambition.
“A good fraudster is not necessarily a good politician. Trying to turn a thief into a leader is the ultimate betrayal of the revolutionary party by a reactionary leader. The game has begun and that rimming mouth will not be opened again.”
In a rant on X (formerly Twitter), Kasukuwere made more allegations against Tagwirei. Kasukuwere accused Tagwirei of going behind Mnangagwa’s back.
“He has paid people and telling them that ED is sick and he has been anointed. ED must come out and explain to the party and nation if indeed he is no longer fit to lead. The fraudster is distorting him badly.”
Speaking to Business Daily, Kasukuwere brushed off Tagwirei’s accusations as “false and malicious,” and turned the tables on him.
“That one, Tagwirei, is the most corrupt person that I know in Zimbabwe,” Kasukuwere declared before adding, “He didn’t even deny that he is corrupt. He merely said, ‘some people who complain about corruption are more corrupt than myself,’ which is hardly a denial. He even suggested he was corrupt in the right direction on the Dema Power Plant deal because his price was lower – whatever that means.”
Kasukuwere also took a swipe at the controversial US$250 million Dema Power Project, which Tagwirei was awarded in 2016 as an emergency electricity scheme.
He accused Tagwirei of getting the deal without a proper tender and said the project lacked cabinet approval.
“He got that tender without even bidding,” said Kasukuwere. “In his rambling Bulawayo address, Tagwirei proudly confirmed what Zimbabweans have been saying all along: that he is a tenderpreneur, not a businessman.”
The former minister, who served under the late President Robert Mugabe, also dismissed Tagwirei’s claim that the Dema deal had received full cabinet backing.
