Chatunga Mugabe Leaves Guard Fighting for His Life After Alleged Attack

A security guard is fighting for his life in hospital after a brutal attack allegedly led by Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late former President Robert Mugabe.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 4PM at the Ultimate Mining site in Mazowe, which borders Grace Mugabe’s estate. Witnesses say Chatunga arrived with a group of armed men, some wielding AK-47 assault rifles, and accused mine workers of allowing illegal gold panners to trespass on Mugabe family land.

The attack was reportedly sparked after suspected illegal miners fled from Grace Mugabe’s property into the neighbouring mine. Chatunga and his group then stormed the mining concession, blaming its workers for failing to stop repeated intrusions.

One mine worker, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said they were accused of “letting people cross into the Mugabes’ land.”

Another official described the terrifying moment the group arrived, guns in hand. He said Chatunga personally launched the first assault.

According to the witness, Chatunga shouted, “Wasiirei vanhu vachipinda mumunda wapresident chaivo?!’ (Why did you allow people to enter the real president’s land?)” before attacking a security guard with his bare hands.

At least three employees were seriously hurt, suffering skull fractures, broken ribs, and other internal injuries, medical records show.

In the confusion, a firearm reportedly discharged accidentally. A supervisor who tried to calm the situation was also beaten, along with two others named Chipara, Muchemwa, and Elvis Bvumbwe, the security guard, now hospitalised in critical condition.

The supervisor told ZimLive he tried to reason with the group, but was accused of “hiring thugs” to attack the Mugabes, and was met with violence instead.

An affidavit from Dr Motto Hope of Parirenyatwa Hospital confirmed the brutal nature of the assault: multiple lacerations, bone fractures and bruising caused by “sharp and blunt trauma.”

Despite the serious injuries and chaos, Chatunga was not arrested. Witnesses say he showed no remorse — even at Mazowe Police Station, where he allegedly bragged that nobody could touch him.

According to bystanders, he told officers, “If President Mnangagwa hears I’m here, everyone will be fired,” causing the officer-in-charge to back off and return to his car.

Chatunga then reportedly left the station without being detained.
