Police Reveal Who Was Driving Before Chinhoyi Crash Death Toll Rose To 7

The death toll from the horrific Chinhoyi road crash has risen to seven after another victim died in hospital, with police confirming that the officer driving an impounded vehicle was among those killed.

The fatal collision happened on 16 July 2026 along the Harare–Chirundu Road, where a Nissan AD van being driven by the police officer collided head-on with a Nissan NV350 commuter omnibus.

According to NewZimbabwe, ten other people remain admitted to hospital as investigations into the crash continue.

Police Confirm Seventh Fatality In Chinhoyi Crash

Introducing the police statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the number of people killed had increased after one of the injured victims succumbed to injuries.

“ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with the death of seven people in a fatal road traffic accident at the 109km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road, near Chinhoyi Heroes’ Acre on 16 July 2026. The accident involved a Nissan AD van and Nissan NV350 commuter omnibus.”

The collision occurred near the Mashonaland West Provincial Heroes Acre on Thursday afternoon. Six people died at the scene, while the seventh victim later passed away at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.

ZRP Explains Why Officer Was Driving Impounded Vehicle

Following reports surrounding the circumstances of the crash, the police stressed that officers are legally allowed to drive impounded vehicles to secure locations.

Introducing the clarification, Nyathi said:

“ZRP reiterates that it is legal and lawful for a police officer to impound vehicles involved in traffic violations and related criminal acts to a secure place which in this case is a police station.”

He also urged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement.

“Drivers must comply, avoid resisting arrest, fighting police officers, defeating or obstructing the course of justice.”

Police have not released further details on what caused the head-on collision, saying investigations are still underway.

The findings of the investigation are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash that claimed the lives of the police officer and six other people.
