Tagwirei Blundered – Mutsvangwa Weighs In, Recommends Grassroots Route or Chitepo School

ZANU-PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa has criticised controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei for attending the party’s central committee meeting without following proper procedure.

Speaking to The Standard, Mutsvangwa made it clear that Tagwirei had no business attending the high-level gathering on Thursday, 3 July 2025, saying it was a direct violation of the party’s constitution.

Tagwirei Blundered, Says Mutsvangwa

According to Mutsvangwa, Tagwirei acted prematurely by showing up at the central committee meeting before his appointment had been approved by the party’s leadership.

He said the ZANU-PF presidium had not yet deliberated or endorsed Tagwirei’s inclusion, suggesting the businessman either received bad advice from the party’s Harare province leaders or he let his ambition get the better of him.

“The presidium was supposed to deliberate and endorse the appointment, but whether it was for lack of proper advice from the Harare provincial leadership or personal ambition, he assumed it would be a headlong stampede. It was procedurally wrong and the constitution had to be read out to him that ‘you are not yet a member and that you are coming into an institution with principles and guidelines’,” he said.

Mutsvangwa said Tagwirei’s move raised red flags about his understanding of how the party works, and questioned whether he was ready to be part of the ZANU-PF system.

He May Need to Start from the Bottom

He suggested the businessman should consider going back to basics by starting from the grassroots structures or enrolling in the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology, where ZANU-PF members are taught the party’s foundational principles.

Mutsvangwa said the way Tagwirei jumped into the process, seemingly more focused on gaining influence than understanding the responsibilities that come with it

“This kind of behaviour creates its own problems because it flouts the constitution, the party guiding principles and tenets. It shows that you are not ready to be part of it, and you may have to go back and understand where you are. He wanted to know the power he was assuming, not the mode to exercise that power. Without that ‘faux pas’, the process would have taken its due course. It brings with it an element of bad faith or uninformed ambition. This ignorance or naivety indicates that his beginning should be the Chitepo School of Ideology. The tenets of the party are concretised in its constitution and if you are coming in you have to relate accordingly,” Mutsvangwa said.
