Bobby Motaung Explains Why Kaizer Chiefs Might Not Pursue Percy Tau
Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has shed light on why the club is likely to pass on signing Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau.
This comes despite the player’s availability and widespread speculation linking him to Naturena.
Motaung Questions Tau’s Priorities
Speaking on the Smash Sports Podcast, Motaung suggested that the club was not impressed by Tau’s approach, hinting that financial demands took priority over passion for the badge.
“Our industry is funny; when you want a player and when we start talking, [and] you start talking about money first, he’s not coming to our club. That’s not your player,” Motaung said.
Bobby Motaung emphasized that genuine passion for football should come before financial considerations. He argued that players who truly love the game prioritize the opportunity to represent a club over immediate monetary gain. According to him, when a player begins negotiations by asking about salary, it signals a lack of true commitment and suggests they are no longer driven by the spirit of the sport.
“When you love the game, money will come. If you say, ‘This is the club I want to play for,’ [and other things come later]. But if you start by saying, ‘How much are you giving me?’ That person is no longer playing for the game,” he continued.
Motaung emphasized that while money is necessary, genuine commitment and the right attitude are just as important.
“The industry taught me that, the issue of salary… Yes, you need money, I need to pay school fees, maintenance, but the thing of loving people, the sacrifice is hard. It’s something deep. If you don’t have the right spirit, you can run away or quit,” he added.

Tau Open to Offers But Prioritizes Sundowns
A few weeks ago, Percy Tau openly stated he could consider joining Kaizer Chiefs if they were prepared to pay him R450,000 a month.
However, he made it clear that Mamelodi Sundowns remain his preferred destination, although he is also willing to play for Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch, or any other club showing serious interest.
Zamalek and PSL Clubs Linked to Tau
The 31-year-old attacker, who recently played a short-term stint with Qatar SC, is now a free agent. Reports have linked him to Egyptian giants Zamalek, who are rebuilding after a difficult season across competitions.
Securing a new club will be crucial if Tau hopes to remain in the Bafana Bafana setup as they prepare for upcoming qualifiers.
