Former High Court Judge Justice Moses Chinhengo Dies

Former High Court Judge, Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo has died. The esteemed jurist died yesterday in Masvingo at the age of 69. The precise cause of his death has not been disclosed.

A spokesperson for the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Mr Daniel Nemukuyu, officially confirmed the tragic news. He conveyed the profound sorrow felt across the nation’s judiciary.

Former High Court Judge Justice Moses Chinhengo Passes Away

In an official statement, Mr Nemukuyu expressed the collective grief of the nation’s legal body, stating:

“The Chief Justice of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the JSC, Honourable Justice Luke Malaba, the Judicial Service Commissioners, the Judge President of the High Court, judges and magistrates, the secretary of JSC and members of the Judicial Service, would like to express their deepest condolences to the Chinhengo family on the death of former High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo.”

Justice Chinhengo’s career was marked by distinguished service both at home and across the Southern African region. After being appointed to the Zimbabwe High Court bench in 2004, his expertise was sought internationally. He went on to serve as a High Court judge in Botswana and an acting Judge of Appeal in Lesotho. His illustrious career also included an appointment as an Acting Judge of the High Court of Namibia.

Justice Moses Chinhengo’s Legacy

His academic journey began at the University of Zimbabwe, where he graduated with a law degree in 1978. Following the nation’s independence, he was swiftly appointed to a significant role within the government. He served as an undersecretary at the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Affairs until 1982. The following year, he was promoted to head both the Department of Parliamentary Affairs and the Justice Department.

Before his judicial appointment, Justice Chinhengo’s extensive experience included working as a legal officer in the Ministry of Justice and later as a legal practitioner and corporate executive. This diverse background provided him with a deep understanding of the law from multiple perspectives.

Mourners are currently gathered at the Chinhengo Farm in the Nyaningwe area of Masvingo to pay their respects. The family will announce burial arrangements in due course.
