Two men, who were allegedly implicated as drug suppliers by Robert Mugabe Jr, have been denied bail after spending a week in custody. The dramatic court decision comes just days after Mugabe Jr himself was released on bail, creating a stark contrast in their legal fortunes and fuelling fresh public debate. The pair now remain behind bars as their case proceeds.
Simbarashe Kaseke, aged 37, and Wellington Ncube, aged 19, appeared before Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki. The court ruled that the two were not suitable candidates for bail and were considered flight risks because they are facing a serious offence. According to the prosecution, the two men are central figures in the ongoing police investigation into a wider drug syndicate.
The Arrest And The Alleged Drug Haul
The court heard that on 1 October 2025, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics acted on a tip-off. They descended upon Number 38 Boscobel Drive in the affluent Highlands suburb of Harare. According to H-Metro, a search was conducted on Wellington Ncube at the scene.
“Wellington Ncube was searched and found in possession of seven sachets of indo hybrid dagga and two pink Ecstacy pills in his pockets,” the prosecution stated.
Upon being questioned, Ncube reportedly pointed the finger at his employer. He implicated Simbarashe Kaseke as the owner of the drugs. Kaseke was found inside the house and was subsequently searched.
“He was found in possession of 15 transparent sachets of Indo Hybrid dagga and four pink Ecstacy pills which were seized from his back pockets,” the court was told.
The seized dagga was weighed in the presence of the two accused. The total weight was approximately 26 grams, with a street value of US$380 (approximately R7,000). Prosecutor Mandirasa Chigumira led the case against the two men.
A Contrasting Outcome For Robert Mugabe Jr
The bail denial for Kaseke and Ncube stands in sharp relief to the treatment of Robert Mugabe Jr just days earlier. iHarare reported last week that Robert Mugabe Jr was granted bail of US$300 (approximately R5,500) by the same magistrate, Lisa Mutendereki, after spending only two nights in custody.
His bail conditions required him to report to the CID every Friday and to remain at his given address. Prosecutor Mandirasa Chigumira outlined the conditions set for Mugabe Jr.
During his own court appearance, the police account of Mugabe Jr’s arrest differed from the larger syndicate allegations. The court heard that during a traffic stop, a search of his bag revealed a smaller quantity of drugs.
“Upon searching the accused’s black sling bag, police officers recovered two sachets of dagga, one pack of Rizla, and a white dagga crusher,” the prosecutor said.
That recovered dagga was weighed at just 2 grams, with an estimated value of US$30 (R550). His next court appearance is scheduled for 22 October 2025.
Police Allegations Of A Wider Network
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have publicly framed this case as a significant bust of a drug syndicate. In a statement issued on 2 October 2025, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi linked Mugabe Jr to several other suspects, including Kaseke and Ncube.
The alleged network, as named by the police, also includes Phillip Munetsi Chiyangwa, aged 26, the son of prominent businessman Phillip Chiyangwa, as well as Mitchel Jackson, aged 28, and Tanaka Kashamba, aged 25. This broader syndicate allegation forms the serious context in which Kaseke and Ncube were denied bail, as the court deemed them a flight risk while investigations into the wider network continue.
