Greendale Man Loses US$20 000 In Brazen Car Smash And Grab
A Greendale man lost US$20,000 (approximately R380,000) in a shocking daylight theft after brazen thieves smashed their way into his parked vehicle outside a restaurant in Avondale. Herbert Ngwenduna, 65, had left his Toyota GD6 along Suffolk Road on Wednesday afternoon, only to return and find his money gone.
According to the H-Metro, Ngwenduna went inside for a meeting and believed his belongings were safe. Two hours later, his car alarm went off. When he rushed outside, he discovered the car’s quarter glass had been broken and a bag containing the large sum of cash stolen.
CCTV Footage Reveals Brazen Theft
Police investigations quickly turned to surveillance footage from the area. The CCTV evidence showed the suspects arriving in a black Nissan X-Trail and targeting Ngwenduna’s car with precision.
A police report detailed the incident, stating:
“It was established, through CCTV footage, that two people who were driving a black Nissan Xtrail, registration number not captured, parked behind the complainant’s vehicle, disembarked from their vehicle, proceeded to the complainant’s car, broke the car quarter glass and stole the bag and went away.”
The suspects moved swiftly, breaking the glass and escaping with the bag of cash without raising attention.
Police Confirm Massive Loss
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case and the scale of the theft.
He said:
“Police are investigating a theft from car case in Avondale. Total value stolen is US$20 000 and nothing has been recovered.”
The thieves remain on the run, and the registration number of their getaway car was not recorded on the CCTV footage. The investigation is continuing as police track leads in the high-profile theft.
