One Dead, Several Injured In A Brutal Attack Over US$15 Court Fine

One man was left dead, and multiple individuals were seriously injured in a brutal attack over a $15 court fine.  The altercation, which took place on the 15th of October, originated from a ruling by the Village Head against two brothers in Sigilikithi Village in the Sikhobokobo area.

The heart of the conflict began when a local villager reported the brothers, Yizo Dlodlo (46) and Mduduzi Dlodlo, for allowing their livestock to graze in a protected pasture. The Village Head’s tribunal subsequently imposed a fine on the brothers. However, rather than accept the ruling, the Dlodlo brothers allegedly marched to the homestead of the man who had reported them, armed with axes and knobkerries (traditional fighting clubs), to demand their money back.

What began as a heated argument swiftly descended into a brutal and chaotic melee. According to official sources, the brothers confronted the complainant and his wife, leading to a violent physical attack.

The situation grew even more dire when two other villagers, identified as Ndumiso Mathe and Velele Sibanda, intervened in a desperate attempt to stop the assault. In the ensuing struggle, makeshift weapons, including logs, an axe, and a knobkerrie, were used by all parties involved.

The police, detailing the event in a statement on X, described the fatal turn of events:

“An altercation ensued and the suspects attacked the complainant and his wife. Two villagers, Ndumiso Mathe and Velele Sibanda, intervened and struck back using logs, an axe and a knobkerrie.”

Tragically, Yizo Dlodlo was struck during the fight and died at the scene. His brother, Mduduzi, alongside the original complainant and his wife, all sustained significant injuries in the savage exchange.

Police Issue A Stern Warning To The Public

In the aftermath of the bloodshed, local authorities have issued a stern plea for calm and restraint. The incident has highlighted the dangers of individuals attempting to mete out their own justice instead of relying on established community or legal structures. The police statement emphasised this point, urging the public to seek peaceful resolutions.

The statement continued, advising,

“Police have since urged villagers to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid taking the law into their own hands.”
