The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) said that a hearing to determine whether the strike interdict against its members at Ford South Africa was permanent or not would be heard next month.
This past week, Ford South Africa workers affiliated to the union embarked on a strike, demanding profit share in addition to their performance bonuses.
However, the Labour Court interdicted the strike on Friday, declaring it unlawful and unprotected.
The union said it noted the interdict, adding that it would hold consultative meetings with their members at the company.
In the meantime, workers are expected to report for duty on Monday.
Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola: “The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has noted that the Labour Court in Johannesburg has granted Ford SA a temporary interdict to block the strike. Ford has said in an internal staff communique that the plant needs to be ‘recalibrated’ following the strike and therefore production will only be capable of resuming as from 6h00am Monday, 8 July 2024. Therefore, all workers are expected to report for duty on Monday.”
