Ramokgopa says Eskom has spent R6 billion less on diesel in past few months

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that Eskom has spent R6 billion less on diesel in the last three months.

Former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan previously revealed that the power utility burnt R65 billion on diesel in the last five years.

In the past, political parties have accused the power utility of heavily burning diesel to keep the lights on.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Ramokgopa, however, said Eskom was no longer relying on diesel to keep the country free of load shedding.

“We are not burning diesel at levels that are unacceptable for us to be able to maintain this kind of performance. There is nothing about diesel that is anchoring the performance that we have right now. It all has to do with the performance of this coal-fired power station and the work that the team has done.”
