Chief Justice Luke Malaba, speaking on behalf of the entire Judicial Service Commission (JSC), confirmed the tragic news in an official condolence message. The statement announced that Justice Chatukuta had died the previous day, though specific details regarding the cause of death were not provided in the official release.
A Stellar Legal Career
Justice Chatukuta’s journey in the law was long and distinguished. Her foundational legal education was at the University of Zimbabwe, where she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1985. This academic beginning launched a diverse career that saw her serve the public in several key roles before she ascended to the bench. She worked as a Public Prosecutor, a part-time lecturer at her alma mater, and as a director at the Legal Aid Directorate.
Her official judicial career began on 29 August 2005, when she was appointed as a Judge of the High Court. According to the Judicial Service Commission, she served with distinction in this capacity for an impressive 16 years. Her dedication and expertise were recognised with her elevation to the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe on 3 June 2021, where she served until her passing.
An Outpouring Of Condolences
The news of her death has prompted a wave of sorrow from the highest levels of the judiciary. Chief Justice Luke Malaba expressed the collective grief of the legal fraternity. In his official statement, he extended the Commission’s deepest sympathies to the Chatukuta family.
He was quoted saying:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. May the Lord provide them with comfort during this difficult time.”
The Judicial Service Commission’s message also provided practical details for mourners, stating that they were gathered at the family home, number 18 Lower Hampden Road in Marlborough, Harare.
