Grade 7 Pupil Blows US$1,500 On Bar Drinks And Games
A 13-year-old boy from Bulawayo has admitted in court to stealing his mother’s entire residential stand savings. The Grade 7 school leaver took over US$1,500 and R1,500, blowing the fortune on a wild spending spree with a friend that included new clothes, gaming, and drinks at a local bar.
The shocking case wa heard at the Tredgold Magistrates’ Courts on Monday, November 24, 2025.
A Mother’s Savings Vanish
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the theft occurred on September 16, 2025. The teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, stole the cash from his family’s home in Mahatshula North. The money represented his mother’s diligent savings, earmarked for the purchase of a residential stand. The discovery was heartbreaking for the parent.
The boy’s mother reported the missing money. Police investigations led to the recovery of the plastic bag that had contained the savings, but the cash itself was gone. The authorities swiftly identified the teenager as the prime suspect.
A Reckless Spending Spree Unveiled
The court heard how the young boy did not act alone. After taking the money, he teamed up with a friend and embarked on a lavish spending spree. The pair splurged the funds on a variety of luxuries far beyond their years. Their purchases included new clothes, extensive gaming sessions, and drinks at a popular local bar known as Hashtag.
The total amount spent was a staggering US$1,500 (approximately R27,000) and R1,500. In a short period, the two boys managed to completely exhaust the savings that were meant for a family home.
A Guilty Plea And Custody Awaiting Sentencing
Facing the court, the teenager pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. Magistrate Richard Ramaboea presided over the case. The magistrate made the decision to remand the minor in custody at the Percy Ibbotson Juvenile Centre.
The boy is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on December 13, 2025.
