Sharks Pen Emotional Message

In confirming his departure, the Sharks posted a touching farewell message on X, thanking Am for his immense contribution to the Durban-based franchise.

“A leader. A Springbok. A Shark through and through. With over 100 caps to his name, we say thank you to Lukhanyo Am for his years of dedication, leadership, and excellence in the black and white. You’ve left an indelible mark on this club, both on and off the field. Wishing you every success as you embark on your next chapter in Japan.”

Am leaves behind a legacy built on consistency, leadership, and composure — traits that played a defining role in both the Sharks’ and Springboks’ recent successes.

Return to Familiar Territory

Am’s move marks his second stint in Japan. In 2022, he spent time with the Kobe Steelers, where he made an impact with three tries in six appearances.

Now, he heads to Glenn Delaney’s Dynaboars, who released a short teaser clip earlier this week showing Am’s recent performance for the Sharks in their URC clash against the Scarlets.

Am is currently named on the Springbok standby list for the end-of-year international campaign, following his role in helping South Africa secure back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles.

A Growing South African Contingent

Am will not be alone in Japan. He becomes the fifth South African player on the Dynaboars roster, joining Pieter Scholtz, Walt Steenkamp, Friedle Olivier and Gideon Koegelenberg.

The squad has also bolstered its ranks with notable signings including Japan-born flyhalf Shun Miyake from Canterbury, and Olympic sevens player Jose Seru from the Kintetsu Liners.
