Senegal Vows Legal Fight, Refuses to Hand Back AFCON Trophy After Losing Title to Morocco
Senegal have refused to hand back their Africa Cup of Nations trophy, escalating tensions after being stripped of the title in a dramatic ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The West African nation has also threatened legal action, signalling that the dispute is far from over following one of the most controversial decisions in the tournament’s history.

Shock Reversal Stuns Football World
In an unprecedented move announced late on Tuesday, CAF overturned the result of the AFCON final, awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory nearly two months after their defeat.
The decision effectively erased Senegal’s 1–0 extra-time win, sending shockwaves across the global football community and sparking widespread debate.
Final Marred by Dramatic Protests
The final itself had already been overshadowed by controversy. Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest of a late penalty awarded to Morocco.
Despite the disruption, the match resumed, with Senegal going on to save the resulting Panenka-style penalty before eventually securing victory after extra time — a result that initially crowned them champions.
Federation Slams Decision, Vows Fight
According to the DailyMail, the Senegalese Football Federation has reacted angrily, with Secretary General Abdoulaye Sow insisting the trophy would remain in Senegal.
He described the ruling as unjust and claimed global reaction had reflected widespread outrage. Officials say consultations are ongoing, with legal avenues being explored to challenge the outcome.
“The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is corrupt, and the reactions worldwide following this decision confirm total outrage. The FSF president is in discussions with all those involved. The fight is far from over. I want to reassure all Senegalese people. Senegal has the right and victory is on its side. The cup will not leave the country,” he said.
CAF Cites Rule Violations
CAF said its decision followed an investigation launched after a complaint from the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.
The governing body ruled that Senegal’s conduct during the match breached competition regulations, specifically Article 82, leading to the forfeiture of the final.
In addition to awarding Morocco a 3–0 win, CAF also imposed financial penalties related to the incident.
Players React With Defiance
Senegal’s players have responded with open defiance on social media, posting images celebrating their triumph and dismissing the ruling.
Midfielder Habib Diarra and Pathé Ciss shared photos with the trophy, while Idrissa Gana Gueye reflected on resilience and unity among supporters.
Defender El Hadji Malick Diouf took a more direct stance, suggesting titles should be decided on the pitch rather than through administrative rulings.
Uncertainty Over Final Outcome
With Senegal refusing to return the trophy and preparing for a legal challenge, the saga appears far from resolved.
The dispute now threatens to escalate beyond CAF, potentially heading to international arbitration as both sides stand firm in a controversy that has gripped African football.
