Air Zimbabwe’s Relaunched London Route Hits First Major Setback
Air Zimbabwe has explained why its recently relaunched Harare-London route suffered its first cancellation, just days after returning to the skies following a 14-year absence. The national airline said the service was disrupted by operational reasons before announcing a revised schedule for affected travellers.
The cancellation affected the Friday, 1 August departure from Harare to London Gatwick. Air Zimbabwe has since confirmed that the flight has been rescheduled while outlining when normal operations are expected to resume.
Air Zimbabwe Explains London Flight Disruption
In a statement issued on Saturday, 2 August, Air Zimbabwe said the flight had been postponed because of operational reasons.
The airline said:
“Air Zimbabwe wishes to advise its valued customers that the Harare-London flight scheduled for Friday, 1 August 2026 has been postponed due to operational reasons.”
Air Zimbabwe confirmed that the rescheduled flight would depart Harare at 9:00pm on Saturday, arriving at London Gatwick at 6:00am on Sunday.
The airline also adjusted the return service.
“The London-Harare flight, originally scheduled for Saturday, will now depart London Gatwick at 8:00am on Sunday and is expected to arrive in Harare at 7:00pm the same day.”
Crew Issue Reportedly Behind Flight Cancellation
ZimLive reports that the disruption was linked to a crew issue involving the aircraft operating the route.
The publication reports that one of the pilots assigned to the Airbus A330-300, which Air Zimbabwe is operating under a wet-lease agreement with Spanish airline Plus Ultra, reportedly fell ill before departure. [I cannot verify this]
According to the publication, there was no standby pilot available in Harare, resulting in the cancellation of the scheduled service. [I cannot verify this]
Air Zimbabwe Hopes To Resume Normal London Flights
Air Zimbabwe said it expects normal operations to resume after the rescheduled service.
The airline currently operates three weekly flights between Harare and London, with departures from Harare on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Return services from London are scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Harare-London route was relaunched in July 2026, marking Air Zimbabwe’s return to the United Kingdom after a 14-year break. The latest disruption is the first reported cancellation since the service resumed. The airline has indicated that it expects the next scheduled Sunday departure to operate as planned.
