“During the Expo, flights to Mutare will cost US$85 one-way and US$150 return. The journey takes about 30 minutes!”
Public Reaction: Excitement Meets Scepticism
The news was met with a wave of mixed reactions online. While many celebrated the return of air travel to Mutare, a significant number of users questioned the high cost, the state of the Mutare airport infrastructure, and the airline’s reliability.
One major point of discussion was the price comparison with other modes of transport. User Zimpricecheck provided context, noting:
“For comparison, bus travel to Mutare costs US$7-8, and driving (in a non-hybrid Honda Fit, Vitz, or Note) is around US$40.”
Many users compared the fares to international routes. User Simpleton @FariPasi exclaimed on X:
“Madness! Return flight to Munich from London costs USD115 and air Zim is charging more than double the fare for a domestic flight that is a fifth the distance.”
Others raised concerns about the usability of the Mutare airport, which has been largely dormant for years. User BONZO reSVOSVE @ErickZirevo asked pointedly:
“Is the airport in Mutare still usable, since it was last used by SMITH in 1979?”
Another user, @sheunopamkz, expressed safety concerns, writing in a mix of English and Shona:
“And that airport next to Mutare Teachers College, Mwari ave nesu (God be with us), maybe we should have got the infrastructure in place first other than jumping into looking like we are doing something. Its a disaster waiting to happen.”
Despite the criticism, some saw the venture as a positive step. User Mansa Musa Muriuki @RelordingIt viewed it as an experience, writing:
“Mutare will be the joy ride. Ndege ndoitori trip yacho (The plane is the trip itself).”
A recurring theme in the online discourse was the currency used for the fares. Several users, including TEDIOUS MUSINACHIREVO @VMusinachirevo, questioned why the prices were quoted in US dollars and not the local ZiG currency, asking:
“Why charge in American Currency when we have our own currency? Make it make sense to me!”
Prospective passengers are advised to contact the Air Zimbabwe sales offices directly or their travel agent to book and to confirm the final ticket price, as the advertised fares are marked with an asterisk, indicating potential additional taxes and charges.
