Alick Macheso Explains The Surprising Reason Behind His Changing Hairstyles
Macheso has recently been turning heads with different hairstyles and plaiting patterns whenever he takes to the stage.
The change has attracted plenty of attention, particularly because the musician was traditionally associated with a more conservative haircut.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail Entertainment, Macheso explained that experimenting with his hair is nothing new for him.
“It is not the first time that I am trying something new with my hair. I have always done this from the time I embarked on my music career over 40 years ago.”
He recalled having worn several different styles over the years, including an Afro, perm and box cut.
“I have done Afro, perm and box cut, but I have not been cutting my hair of late. I have been plaiting it, and I am loving every bit of it.”
The sungura maestro has also been spotted wearing different forms of headgear during performances, sometimes prompting fans to call for him to remove it.
When his hair is not plaited, Macheso said he also wears styles such as a perm, freeze or Afro.
Macheso Says Hair Does Not Define A Person
Macheso also addressed the wider attention surrounding his appearance, stressing that someone’s hairstyle should not be used to determine their character.
The musician said he considers himself an artiste and views his appearance as part of his creative expression.
“I was born an artiste and what I do is pure art. I live art every day of my life.”
He acknowledged that people will have different opinions about his appearance but said his priority is remaining comfortable with his choices.
Macheso also used a Shona expression to make his point about character.
“Kunyangwe ukaita musvu-u (even if you have a bald head), if you are not a person of upright moral virtue, you will remain that way.”
He added:
“A person is not defined by their hairdo, but by what they carry in their heart and mind.”
The musician said he has never dismissed people because of their dressing, hairstyles or general appearance.
Macheso’s Manager Initially Struggled With The New Look
Macheso’s changing hairstyles have also been noticed by his manager and publicist, Tich Makahamadze.
Makahamadze revealed that he was initially surprised when Macheso first appeared with the new look and tried to persuade him to abandon it.
“It took a bit of time for me to come to terms with this new hairstyle. Actually, the first time he appeared in that style, I was just as shocked as everyone else.”
However, he said Macheso appeared comfortable with the hairstyle and eventually accepted that it was his choice.
“I tried to convince him to drop it, but to no avail. But I realised he was so comfortable with it.”
Fans have even suggested that Macheso should make a song about his hairstyles.
The musician, however, said he does not see the need to turn the subject into a song, describing it as a personal choice rather than a major musical theme.
For now, Macheso appears comfortable experimenting with his appearance while continuing his long-running music career.
