Alick Macheso Reveals How He Used to Hunt and Sell Mice to Earn a Living Before Fame
Veteran musician Alick Macheso has opened up about his early life, revealing that he once made a living by hunting and selling mice in Dzivaresekwa.
Raised in Shamva before moving to Dzivaresekwa in the early 1980s, Macheso said he could catch as many as 900 mice in a good week, selling them in his community and surrounding areas.
“Many people used to laugh at me, but I managed to make a living from selling mice,” Macheso said. “I continued as a hunter and I am glad that I have fulfilled my wish and lived the best way possible.”

Faith and Determination Behind the Success
Macheso credits his faith in God for helping him rise from humble beginnings to become one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated musicians.
“For someone who comes from humble beginnings to be where I am today is God’s great favour. I am glad that I am someone important in society yet I used to be a mice hunter on the same grounds where I am performing today,” he said
He encouraged people to embrace their hustles and talents as a way to earn a living.
“In life, we should not be ashamed of what we do to earn a living. What is important is to earn and look after our families through the gifts that God gave us,” Macheso said.
Talents Beyond Music
The musician also spoke about other skills he discovered while young, including fishing.
“I am also a good fisherman. Of course, I don’t have time to go to the river now, but each time I do, I can catch enough relish to last my family for weeks,” he said.
Alick Macheso emphasized that everyone is gifted in different ways and encouraged young people to develop their talents.
Prayer and Perseverance
While Alick Macheso does not belong to any church, he describes himself as a prayer warrior. His spirituality and belief in God, he says, have been central to his personal and professional success.
“My career continues to blaze a trail of success with each passing year. I am grateful that God has seen the potential I have, and I will continue to develop that gift for years to come,” he said.
