AmaZulu Star Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya Reveals Khama Billiat’s Role In His Rapid Rise
Zimbabwean forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is attracting plenty of attention in South Africa, with his impressive start to the Betway Premiership season drawing comparisons with some of the country’s biggest attacking stars.
The 23-year-old AmaZulu striker has responded positively to the comparisons, particularly because one of the players he is being likened to, former Kaizer Chiefs and Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat, is someone he personally looks up to.
Ngwenya Making His Mark At AmaZulu
Ngwenya has emerged as one of the standout performers in AmaZulu’s early-season campaign under coach Arthur Zwane.
His goalscoring form has been central to the team’s resurgence, with the Zimbabwean having already scored eight goals and provided one assist.
Zwane’s experience working with top players during his time at Kaizer Chiefs has also given him a close view of Ngwenya’s development, with the coach believing the youngster has the technical qualities and finishing ability to reach a high level.
Khama Billiat Remains An Inspiration
Rather than being uncomfortable with the comparisons, Ngwenya said they make him happy, especially because Billiat is his role model.
“Yeah, I feel happy because one of those players is my role model, Khama Billiat,” Ngwenya said, according to iDiski Times.
The relationship between the two Zimbabweans goes beyond Ngwenya simply admiring Billiat’s career.
The AmaZulu forward revealed that he regularly speaks to the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs star, who offers him advice as he continues developing his career.
“It makes me feel happy because every time I talk to him, he always tells me to shine,” Ngwenya said.
Defenders Now Have Ngwenya In Their Sights
Ngwenya’s goalscoring exploits have also changed the way opposition teams approach him.
The striker recognises that defenders are increasingly aware of the threat he poses and are likely to pay closer attention to his movement during matches.
Rather than allowing tighter marking to limit his impact, Ngwenya says he is working on finding different ways to create opportunities.
“Yeah, obviously it’s a big challenge because they are going to try to always mark me, but I will try to find another way to penetrate,” he said.
