America Confirms 30 September Exit From Zimbabwe’s Health Programmes
The United States will end its health funding programmes in Zimbabwe at the end of September 2026, bringing more than 20 years of US-supported health initiatives to a close. US Ambassador Pamela Tremont said Washington respects Zimbabwe’s decision to reject the proposed bilateral Health Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
US Health Funding In Zimbabwe Ends In September
Tremont said the two countries had worked together for decades on HIV prevention, treatment and broader health-system support.
“For more than two decades, the United States and Zimbabwe have worked together to strengthen health systems and expand access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment.”
She said the partnership had contributed to Zimbabwe reaching more than 95% HIV epidemic control, with 97% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 98% of diagnosed people receiving antiretroviral therapy and 96% of those on treatment achieving viral suppression.
The US has supported programmes involving ARVs, HIV prevention medication, condoms, family planning and health-worker support.
Zimbabwe Rejected New Health MoU
Tremont said the US had changed how it provides international health assistance through a model involving recipient-country co-investment.
“With Zimbabwe’s decision to decline a bilateral health MOU, U.S.-supported health programs will conclude at the end of September.”
She added that Washington would work with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care to ensure a responsible handover.
US Shifts Focus To Trade And Investment
The funding withdrawal does not signal the end of US-Zimbabwe relations. Tremont said the embassy would continue engaging Zimbabwe on economic opportunities.
“The U.S.-Zimbabwe relationship now pivots: from one largely focused on health and humanitarian assistance, to one built on broader economic, trade and investment opportunities.”
The development marks a significant shift in bilateral cooperation, with health assistance set to give way to greater emphasis on business, trade and investment.
