Businessman Bonelela “Buzza” Mgudlwa has strongly denied claims linking his wife to PPE tenders. In a statement on Saturday, Mgudlwa clarified that Anele Mdoda has no connection to the deals.
He explained that the business dealings happened in 2020. However, his relationship with Mdoda began in mid-2024. The couple later married in 2025. Therefore, he dismissed any association as “factually incorrect, malicious, reckless and unfair”.
Tribunal Rules PPE Contracts Invalid
Meanwhile, the Special Tribunal ruled in March 2026 that two PPE contracts were unlawful. These contracts involved Mgudlwa and his business partner, Katleho O’Hara Mokonyane. The Mpumalanga Department of Health paid their company over R14 million during the pandemic.
However, the Special Investigating Unit found major procurement violations. Officials bypassed proper processes and ignored bid committees. They also deviated from required contract procedures.
Furthermore, the supplier lacked SAHPRA accreditation. Judge David Makhoba ruled that Mgudlwa and Mokonyane acted fraudulently and dishonestly. As a result, the court held them personally liable. The ruling ordered them to repay profits and legal costs.
Mgudlwa Plans Legal Challenge
However, Mgudlwa rejected the tribunal’s findings and defended his actions. He stated that he followed a legitimate Request for Quotations process. He also said the Department of Health managed the process.
Additionally, he insisted that the goods met all specifications. Authorities accepted and used the supplied items.
Therefore, he argued that the state suffered no financial loss. He has now instructed his legal team to challenge the ruling in the High Court.
Meanwhile, the case has drawn public and political attention. This attention stems from Mdoda’s public profile and Mokonyane’s family ties. Mgudlwa urged the media to act responsibly. He warned against implicating uninvolved individuals. Finally, he reaffirmed his commitment to integrity and faith. He expressed confidence that “truth, justice and restoration” will prevail.
