Brad Evans Breaks Heath Streak’s Record with Fiery Five-for in One-Off Test Against Afghanistan

Brad Evans Breaks Bowling Record as Zimbabwe Take Control Against Afghanistan

Zimbabwe fast bowler Brad Evans delivered a sensational performance on Monday, setting a new national bowling record as Zimbabwe dominated the opening day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan at Harare Sports Club.

Playing his first Test in more than two years following injury setbacks, Evans ripped through the Afghan batting lineup, claiming five of the last seven wickets and conceding just 22 runs off 57 deliveries. His spell helped bundle out Afghanistan for 127 runs after they had earlier reached 77-2.

Evans’ figures of 5-22 are now the most economical five-wicket haul by a Zimbabwean in Test cricket, surpassing the late Heath Streak’s 5-27 recorded against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 2000.

“Heath was a Zimbabwe cricket legend, so to better his figures makes my achievement all the more special,” the 28-year-old said after play.

Zimbabwe Batters Build Early Lead

In reply, Zimbabwe’s top order showed composure and control. Ben Curran (52 not out) and Nick Welch (49 not out) shared a crucial 97-run stand for the second wicket, guiding the home side to 130-2 at stumps — a three-run first-innings lead with eight wickets still in hand.

Earlier, Blessing Muzarabani complemented Evans’ heroics with three wickets, tightening Zimbabwe’s grip on the contest and giving the hosts the upper hand heading into day two.

Return of a Determined Fast Bowler

Evans’ comeback story added emotional weight to his record-breaking display. After more than two years on the sidelines battling injuries, his return to red-ball cricket could not have been more impactful.

His ability to extract bounce and movement from the surface unsettled the Afghan batters, who struggled to recover once early partnerships were broken.

Zimbabwe in Command Heading into Day Two

With a solid batting platform already in place and Evans’ remarkable spell putting them in control, Zimbabwe will look to extend their lead and build towards a commanding position when play resumes on Tuesday.

The hosts’ all-round performance has reignited optimism among home fans eager to see Zimbabwe secure a rare Test victory.
