Bruce Bvuma Set to Join Itumeleng Khune in Kaizer Chiefs’ Elite Goalkeeping Club

Footballer Bruce Bvuma is set to follow in the footsteps of Itumeleng Khune at Kaizer Chiefs, with a contract extension that will see him reach a milestone achieved by only one goalkeeper in the PSL era at the club.

The new deal is expected to keep Bvuma at Naturena into next season, taking him to a decade since his first-team debut in 2017.

Closing in on a Decade in Gold and Black

According to KickOff, Bvuma is on course to complete 10 years as a first-team player at Chiefs, having made his senior debut in April 2017 during a league defeat to Cape Town City.

Since that introduction, the goalkeeper has endured a challenging journey marked by competition, patience and perseverance.

If the extension is completed as anticipated, Bvuma will become only the second goalkeeper in the PSL era to spend at least a decade at the club from the time of his first-team debut — a feat previously achieved only by Itumeleng Khune.

A Career Built on Longevity and Loyalty

Despite limited minutes in recent seasons, Bvuma’s standing within the Chiefs goalkeeping department remains strong. He has made 79 appearances for the Soweto giants and continues to be regarded as a valuable squad member.

While current club captain Brandon Petersen has moved ahead of him in the pecking order, Chiefs are keen to retain Bvuma, underlining their belief in his experience and professionalism. The new agreement is expected to include an optional additional year.

Bench Role Likely to Continue

With Petersen firmly established as the club’s first choice, Bvuma is expected to spend the remainder of the season on the bench — a role he has often occupied throughout his Kaizer Chiefs career. His last competitive outing came in last season’s Soweto Derby league defeat in May, and he has not featured for the first team in the past eight months.

Rare Company Among Chiefs Goalkeepers

Bvuma, who turns 31 in May, has featured in just under a quarter of Chiefs’ matches since his debut. However, longevity rather than appearances now defines his legacy. While former keeper Brian Baloyi spent more than a decade at the club, part of his stay came before the PSL era, leaving Khune as the only direct modern comparison.

With the impending contract extension, Bvuma is set to cement his place in Kaizer Chiefs history — not through constant selection, but through loyalty, resilience and sustained trust from the club.
