Bulawayo Man Arrested After Gambling Away US$10 300 of His Mother’s Savings on Aviator
Police in Bulawayo have arrested a 22-year-old man after stealing his mother’s long-term savings and blowing the entire amount on the popular online gambling game Aviator.
McMillan Zimunhu of Nkulumane 11 was taken into custody following investigations into the disappearance of cash that had been saved over several years for a housing project.

Money kept at home for years
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the complainant, a 48-year-old self-employed woman, had been storing the money at different hiding places inside her house between 2013 and January 2026.
“All her five children were aware of the money. She last checked it in September 2025, when the amount stood at US$10 300,” said Insp Msebele.
Theft discovered in January
The woman reportedly discovered the loss on 19 January 2026 when she attempted to access the cash, only to find that it had vanished. She immediately reported the matter to the police, triggering investigations.
After interviewing family members, police established that the woman’s second-born son was responsible for the theft.
Money lost through online gambling
According to police, Zimunhu admitted to taking the money on several occasions and using it to gamble on an online betting game known as Aviator.
“He admitted to having used all his mother’s money while gambling and lost it,” said Insp Msebele.
The total amount stolen is US$10 300, and police confirmed that nothing has been recovered.
Police issue warning to the public
Police have urged members of the public to avoid keeping large sums of money in their homes, warning that it exposes them to theft.
They advised people to use banking institutions and other secure financial services to safeguard their savings.
