Bulawayo Man Arrested For Insulting Mnangagwa Dies In ‘Suicide’ Day After Bail

Bulawayo Man Who Called Mnangagwa And Zanu PF ‘Thieves’ Dies In ‘Suicide’ Day After Bail

A 42-year-old Bulawayo man who was arrested for allegedly insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa has died in a suspected suicide, just one day after he was granted US$50 (approx R925) bail by a provincial magistrate.

Tineyi Mhosva appeared before provincial magistrate Isheunesu Mathoba on March 10, 2026, facing charges of undermining the authority of the president. He was remanded out of custody on bail.

Zimlive reports that according to family sources, Mhosva allegedly consumed a poisonous substance the very next day, on March 11, and died.

Street Vendor Confrontation Led To Arrest

The events leading to Mhosva’s arrest began on February 26, 2026, at the busy intersection of 5th Avenue and George Silundika Street in Bulawayo’s central business district.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mhosva approached a 58-year-old street vendor named Anna Mupandira. The woman was wearing a cap with the words “Zimbabwe Anti-Presidential Criticism” printed on it.

Milton Moyo, representing the State, outlined the allegations before the court. It is claimed that Mhosva questioned Mupandira about the cap before launching into a tirade in Shona, during which he allegedly insulted both the vendor and the president.

The court heard that Mhosva made specific utterances that landed him in legal trouble.

“Zvi hat zvenyu zve Zanu PF zvamakapfeka izvi ndezvembavha. Ini handitongwi nemunhu asiri Gushungo. Ndakaberekwa nembereko yekwa Gushungo. Mnangagwa nevanhu vake imbavha.”

These words translate to a direct accusation that the Zanu PF regalia worn by the woman belongs to “thieves.” Mhosva allegedly went further, declaring that he could only be judged by someone connected to the late former President Robert Mugabe, referred to by his clan praise name, Gushungo, and explicitly stated that President Mnangagwa and his people are “thieves.”

The matter was immediately reported to the police, resulting in Mhosva’s arrest and subsequent court appearance.

Bail Granted But Tragedy Follows

Magistrate Mathoba granted Mhosva bail, set at US$50 (approx. R925), with the understanding that he would return to face trial on charges of undermining the authority of the president—a law frequently invoked in cases involving criticism of the head of state.

Tragically, Mhosva never made it back to court. The day after his release, on March 11, 2026, he was found dead after allegedly ingesting poison.
