Business Insider Africa Names Zimbabwe Among Continent’s Best Performing Economies

Zimbabwe Ranked Among Africa’s Emerging Economic Powerhouses

Zimbabwe has been recognised among Africa’s emerging economic leaders following continued growth in the mining and agricultural sectors, which have become key pillars of the country’s recovery drive.

The recognition comes in the latest 2026 Best Countries ranking published by Business Insider Africa, which identified Zimbabwe as one of the continent’s top-performing economies.

According to the report, countries with strong natural resource sectors, including Zimbabwe, are playing an increasingly important role in shaping Africa’s economic growth trajectory.

Mining and Agriculture Drive Growth

The ranking highlighted Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth and agricultural production as major contributors to the country’s economic performance.

Gold, lithium, platinum and tobacco production have recorded notable growth in recent years, while government-backed farming programmes have helped increase maize and wheat output.

The report stated that “resource-rich countries such as Algeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria are bolstered by exports of oil, gas, minerals and agricultural products,” placing Zimbabwe among economies helping to transform the continent.

Second Republic Reforms Credited

The latest recognition has been linked to economic reforms introduced under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration since 2017.

Government policies targeting mining expansion, infrastructure development, agricultural recovery and fiscal stability have been credited with strengthening economic activity across key sectors.

Speaking recently on the state of the economy, President Mnangagwa said mining and agriculture remained central to Zimbabwe’s long-term development agenda.

“Our economy continues to be driven by strong performance in mining and agriculture, sectors which remain critical pillars towards the attainment of Vision 2030,” he said.

Mineral Exports Boost Foreign Currency Earnings

Zimbabwe’s mining sector has continued to generate significant export revenue amid growing international demand for strategic minerals.

The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe recently reported strong export performance during the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by gold, lithium and platinum shipments.

The corporation said mineral exports were playing a critical role in generating foreign currency inflows and strengthening Zimbabwe’s standing as a leading mining destination in Africa.

Agriculture Sector Strengthens Recovery Efforts

Agriculture has also remained a major component of the country’s economic recovery strategy.

Government-supported irrigation schemes, mechanisation initiatives and climate-resilient farming programmes have contributed to improved food security and export capacity.

The Business Insider Africa ranking assessed countries using factors such as economic performance, governance, infrastructure, opportunity, natural environment and quality of life, with Zimbabwe increasingly gaining attention due to its economic reforms and resource-driven growth.
