CAPS United have rediscovered their confidence after an emphatic 4-2 win over Highlanders at Rufaro Stadium.
The victory could prove crucial as the Green Machine approach the closing stages of the PSL campaign.
Earlier this season, Makepekepe looked like serious title contenders. They quickly climbed to the top of the standings.
At one stage, CAPS United opened a five-point advantage over their rivals. Their performances also sparked hopes of a long-awaited league triumph.
However, their fortunes changed dramatically after beating Dynamos in the Harare Derby on May 10.
The Green Machine then struggled to maintain their earlier momentum. Results became harder to secure, despite several competitive performances.
CAPS United collected only two victories across their next 14 league matches. They defeated Manica Diamonds and Triangle United during that difficult run.
Meanwhile, eight draws and four defeats cost them valuable points. Their title challenge consequently suffered a major setback.
Highlanders victory restores belief
Nevertheless, Sunday’s victory over Highlanders could have changed the mood inside the CAPS United camp.
The four-goal display provided more than just three important league points. It also restored confidence within the squad.
Head coach Takesure Chiragwi believes the performance can spark a strong response. He also expects his players to carry that belief forward.
“I believe this will give the team confidence; we have been playing well but without the results to show for it, but this performance and result against Highlanders can be what the team needs to get back on track and give belief to the team,” he said.
The result therefore gives CAPS United renewed hope. The club can now focus on building consistency during the final stretch.
Three competitions still within reach
With eight league matches remaining, Makepekepe still have plenty to fight for.
The club also faces opportunities in two domestic cup competitions. The Chibuku Super Cup draw is scheduled for Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup Round of 32 begins on Friday.
Therefore, CAPS United can still rescue their season with a strong finish. Their immediate challenge involves turning Sunday’s victory into sustained momentum.
For Chiragwi and his players, the Highlanders triumph could become the catalyst they desperately needed.
Now, the Green Machine must prove that victory was the beginning of a revival.
