A 40-year-old man from Chipinge will spend decades behind bars following his conviction for rape and robbery. The Chipinge Regional Magistrates’ Court handed him an effective 30-year prison sentence.

The case involved a terrifying nighttime attack in which the offender threatened his victim and her young nephew. He also used a knife to intimidate them before carrying out the crimes.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred at around 1 AM on 18 September 2026. The victim was asleep in her bedroom when the man broke into the room.

Armed with an okapi knife, he threatened to kill her if she made any noise. He then ordered her to remain silent.

The offender later moved through the house and confronted the victim’s 12-year-old nephew. He threatened to kill the boy and warned him against making any noise.

Afterwards, the man demanded money from the victim. He then returned to her bedroom and raped her.

The offender subsequently stole a Huawei cellphone worth US$90 and groceries valued at approximately US$30. He then fled the scene with the stolen property.

Victim Reports Attack as Court Hands Down Sentence

The victim reported the incident to her husband after he returned from a funeral. The couple then made a police report, which led to the offender’s arrest.

Following the investigation, the man appeared before the Chipinge Regional Magistrates’ Court. The court convicted him of both rape and robbery.

The magistrates imposed a 20-year prison term for rape. However, the court suspended two years for five years, subject to good behaviour.

He also received a separate 12-year sentence for robbery. The combined sentences resulted in an effective 30 years behind bars.

The ruling delivers a lengthy prison term for the two offences. It also concludes the case involving the violent attack and theft in Chipinge.
