The Municipality of Chitungwiza has dismissed reports of planned home demolitions after an old notice resurfaced online.
The document began circulating on social media on Friday, 23 October, alarming residents across several neighbourhoods.
It suggested that the council intended to demolish houses in areas including Zengeza and Seke. However, council officials say the notice does not represent a new development.
Council Explains Origin of Viral Notice
Council spokesperson Tafadzwa Kachiko addressed the growing concerns in a statement issued yesterday.
He explained that the circulating document dates back to 2020. Therefore, residents should not mistake it for a recent announcement.
“The Council has not issued any such notice recently. Please note that demolitions are only carried out after following the due processes and procedures prescribed by law,” Mr Kachiko said.
His clarification seeks to ease fears among residents who worried about losing their homes. It also highlights the importance of verifying public notices before drawing conclusions.
Residents Urged to Verify Information
Meanwhile, the council has encouraged residents to seek updates through its verified communication platforms.
Kachiko said official channels remain the most reliable sources for announcements concerning municipal affairs.
“For accurate and official communication, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to follow the Council’s official social media platforms for the latest updates and announcements,” he said.
He also urged the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information online.
“We appreciate your cooperation and urge everyone to verify information through official channels before sharing it.”
The council’s statement aims to prevent unnecessary panic while ensuring residents receive accurate information about any future demolition plans.
