Wicknell Chivayo announced a US$1 million reward for the Chevrons on Thursday. He praised the team for reaching the Super Eights at the T20 World Cup. However, he made the payment subject to approval by the “principal.” He often uses that term to reference President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chivayo wrote on X: “Whatever the final outcome will be for the CHEVRONS CRICKET TEAM, all I know is SO FAR, subject to approval by the PRINCIPAL, I already owe them 1 million USD in cash on their return. Beating very strong teams like Australia and Sri Lanka as well as qualifying into the TOP 8 can not just go UNNOTICED… Good luck against INDIA today.”
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe suffered a heavy defeat to India. That loss ended their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
Zimbabwe’s Super Eights Journey Ends
Zimbabwe impressed fans with a strong tournament run. The Chevrons beat Australia and stunned co-hosts Sri Lanka. They also drew with Ireland to secure group qualification.
However, losses to West Indies and India sealed their fate. As a result, only a dead-rubber match against South Africa remains. Nevertheless, their Super Eights qualification marked a major achievement.
Political Questions Surround Chivayo’s Giving
In recent years, Chivayo has distributed millions of dollars publicly. He has supported army generals, religious leaders, sports clubs, and musicians.
However, critics question the motive behind his generosity. Many beneficiaries share ties to Zimbabwe’s political establishment.
Some observers link his largesse to Mnangagwa’s reported term extension plan. The proposal would move the presidential term from 2028 to 2030.
Critics suggest recipients may support such a campaign. However, Mnangagwa has dismissed those claims. He describes Chivayo as a philanthropist, not his proxy.
