Former Zambian ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba has sharply criticized developments surrounding the late Edgar Chagwa Lungu. He accuses authorities of desecrating the former president’s remains.
Nearly eleven months after Lungu’s death, his body remains in a South African mortuary. Meanwhile, a bitter dispute continues between the Zambian government and his family. The disagreement centers on burial authority, timing, and location.
Mwamba formally addressed Cyril Ramaphosa, expressing deep concern over recent actions. He described them as unlawful and culturally offensive. Consequently, tensions between Zambia and South Africa have intensified.
Controversial Removal and Postmortem
According to Mwamba, individuals claiming official authority removed Lungu’s body from a Johannesburg funeral facility. This action allegedly occurred without family consent or legal backing.
Furthermore, the group cited a court order supporting repatriation for a state funeral. However, the family disputes this interpretation. They argue that ongoing legal appeals remain valid.
Soon after, the family secured a court order demanding the immediate return of the body. Nevertheless, officials reportedly ignored this directive. As a result, legal concerns escalated rapidly.
Even more troubling, Mwamba claims a postmortem examination followed in Pretoria. He states that no legal authority or family representation approved it. Therefore, the incident has sparked outrage among many Zambians.
