DJ Maphorisa Reveals How He ‘Saved’ Kabza De Small From a Bad Record Deal

DJ Maphorisa has revealed how he helped Kabza De Small escape a record deal he considered unfair.

The amapiano stars have built one of South Africa’s biggest musical partnerships.

However, Maphorisa says their journey also involved major financial challenges behind the scenes.

He shared the details during his appearance on Podcast and Chill with MacG.

According to Maphorisa, Kabza was stuck in a deal that failed to match his growing value.

The producer then decided to use his industry connections to help his longtime collaborator.

Maphorisa steps in for Kabza De Small

Maphorisa said he wanted Kabza to move into a more lucrative stage of his career.

He believed the amapiano star deserved a deal that reflected his growing success.

“I had to save him from that lame deal,” Maphorisa explained.

He also said his goal was to move Kabza into “real money business.”

The move eventually led to a major agreement involving Sony Music.

Maphorisa said the deal carried an advance worth between R42 million and R44 million.

However, the money was not simply paid as one combined amount.

Instead, both artists reportedly received R22 million each as separate advances.

The arrangement also supported their individual music operations.

Maphorisa’s Blaqboy Music, also known as New Money Gang, benefited from the deal.

Meanwhile, Kabza continued developing his PianoHub platform.

A bigger deal could be coming

The Sony agreement also brought significant expectations for the two musicians.

Major record advances usually require artists to deliver substantial amounts of music.

Nevertheless, Maphorisa believes their production and streaming success helped change their position.

He explained that they managed to recoup the original advance through their music output.

Their commercial success has now encouraged them to think even bigger.

“On our next deal, we could ask Sony Music for R100 million,” Maphorisa boldly declared on the podcast.

The statement highlights the confidence surrounding their next chapter.

It also shows how their musical partnership has developed into a major business relationship.
