DStv Celebrates 30 Years with Free Premium Channels and Big Decoder Discounts

To mark 30 years of DStv, MultiChoice has announced an Open Time Weekend from 7 to 9 November 2025, giving all active DStv decoder subscribers free access to Premium channels.

The promotion, inspired by the early days of M-Net, allows viewers to enjoy blockbuster movies, top sports events, and exclusive entertainment without upgrading their packages. Streaming-only customers will not be included in the offer.

HD Decoders Available at Discounted Prices

As part of the celebrations, MultiChoice is also offering a 30% discount on High Definition (HD) decoders in retail stores starting 1 November.

Customers purchasing through the DStv online store will enjoy even bigger deals, with prices for standalone decoders starting from R299.

Nostalgia Meets Modern Rewards

The 30th anniversary campaign also features a throwback to the 1990s M-Net era, with familiar faces returning to celebrate the milestone.

MultiChoice says the initiative is designed to thank loyal customers while giving others a chance to experience the full Premium offering.

MultiChoice Responds to Streaming Competition

The anniversary celebrations come as DStv faces growing competition from global streaming platforms.

Industry experts suggest that the Open Time Weekend and decoder price cuts are part of MultiChoice’s strategy to reignite interest in satellite TV and reward long-time subscribers.

Mixed Reactions to DStv’s Open Time Weekend

While MultiChoice’s Open Time Weekend and decoder discounts have been promoted as a celebration of 30 years, many viewers expressed skepticism online. Critics argue that the offer does little for existing premium subscribers, labels the promotion as a short-lived gimmick, and question the value of repeated old content. Some also called for more innovation and meaningful benefits rather than temporary access and minor price cuts.

Here are some of the reactions;

@Khal_juniier;

Lol, what’s the point? It’s not like there’s anything worth watching on DStv anyway

@BossoNic;

Repeats of 1990. Good luck watching Sarafina and emzini wezinsizwa

@tutuionandwrite;

They doubled down on lack of choice, to the point of irrelevance. This gimmick is desperate

@Morpheus2610;

Multiplechoice must just innovate, 4th industrial revolution is upon us. Otherwise they will end up like NOKIA story.

@SQ_Gunner;

Mxm no price cut on the subscription. Useless.

@loloTshaba;

Marketing strategy to get lost customers for something which is going to last for only 3 days?

@MalcolmManqoba;

And again nothing for the already premium subscribers from @MultiChoiceGRP . They really have nothing for premium coz unlocking channels doesnt really benefit them. Glad I downgraded from this abuse
