E-Tag Rollout Accelerates: ZINARA Targets Nationwide Coverage Next Year

ZINARA Targets Nationwide E-Tag Coverage by 2026

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has unveiled its plan to ensure that every motorist in the country is using its e-tag cashless tolling system by next year.

This move forms part of its broader effort to modernise the nation’s highways and reduce congestion at toll plazas.

Strong Uptake Since Launch

During a media tour at the Ntabazinduna Toll Plaza on Thursday, ZINARA board chairperson George Manyaya said adoption of the technology has been stronger than anticipated.

More than 30,000 motorists have registered for the system since it was introduced in December 2024, signalling growing confidence in digital tolling.

Faster, Smarter Tolling

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled e-tag system uses automatic number plate recognition to clear vehicles in under two seconds, giving drivers access to dedicated express lanes that operate without toll booth attendants.

ZINARA reports that the innovation has facilitated over 932,000 transactions this year and is already active at 25 of the country’s 29 tollgates.

Part of a Nationwide Transport Strategy

Manyaya said the rollout aligns with the transport ministry’s long-term plans to enhance road safety, improve traffic flow and match regional advancements in smart transport systems.

The e-tag currently caters to private vehicles, public transport operators and commercial fleets in sectors such as mining and logistics.

Payments can be made through prepaid cards or linked accounts, including the Frequent Traveller’s Express Pass.

Focus on Accessibility and Public Awareness

ZINARA said it is working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the system’s expansion is accompanied by greater accessibility, affordability and public education.

The demonstration at Ntabazinduna comes ahead of the busy festive season, a period traditionally marked by heavy traffic volumes and increased pressure on toll points.
