Lake Kariba Death Toll Hits 92 As Search Teams Recover Eight More Bodies

The death toll from the Lake Kariba ferry disaster has risen to 92 after eight additional bodies were recovered on Monday.

The latest recoveries were confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

Commissioner Nyathi said the bodies were recovered from Lake Kariba during ongoing search and recovery operations.

He confirmed that the latest figure stood at 92 as of 3pm on August 17.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that as at 1500 hours today (August 17), the Kariba Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident death toll is now 92 after eight bodies were recovered from Lake Kariba.”

Police Deploy More Resources

Police have maintained a major operation on Lake Kariba since the disaster occurred.

According to Nyathi, the Commissioner-General of Police deployed two large boats and two smaller boats to support the operation.

More than 40 police Sub-aqua members have also been assigned to the search.

Additional police resources have been deployed to coordinate the rescue of survivors and recovery of victims.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that since 11t August 2026, the Commissioner-General of Police has deployed two big boats, two small boats over 40 police Sub-Aqua members and other resources to co-ordinate the rescue of victims, search and the recovery of bodies from Lake Kariba,” reads the police statement.

 Search Operation Continues

The police deployment has focused on locating people still missing and recovering bodies from the lake.

Search and recovery operations are expected to continue as authorities work to account for those who remain missing.

The disaster has triggered a large-scale national response, with multiple agencies involved in the ongoing operation.
