EU Zimbabwe Ambassador Katrin Hagemann Dies in Harare
European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann has died suddenly at the age of 53, months after taking up her diplomatic posting in Harare.
Hagemann reportedly became unwell after breakfast at her residence before she was found unresponsive on Thursday morning.

EU Confirms Ambassador’s Death
The EU Delegation in Zimbabwe confirmed Hagemann’s death in a statement issued on Friday.
The delegation described her passing as sudden and unexpected and offered condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
It said the family’s privacy would be respected and indicated that no further details would be released at this stage.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected passing of Her Excellency Ms Katrin Hagemann on September 3, 2026. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues and all those who mourn this profound loss. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, there will be no further comments at this time,” reads the statement.
Hagemann had been leading the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe since December 2025.
She presented her credentials to President Emmerson Mnangagwa after assuming the position.
Long Diplomatic Career
The German national built an extensive diplomatic career spanning Germany and the European Union.
She began her career at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office before joining the EU Council Secretariat in 2006.
Hagemann later moved to the European External Action Service after it was established in 2011.
Her previous assignments included heading the Political Section at the EU Delegation to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community from 2015 to 2019.
She subsequently served as deputy head of the EU Delegation to Kenya from 2019.
Focus On Zimbabwe-EU Relations
During her relatively short tenure in Zimbabwe, Hagemann highlighted the importance of stronger economic ties between the country and the European Union.
She had pointed to increasing trade between Zimbabwe and the EU while emphasising opportunities for investment.
Hagemann also noted Zimbabwe’s duty-free and quota-free access to the EU Single Market under the Economic Partnership Agreement.
