Female Police Officer Fined US$300 After Locking Colleagues Inside Her Shebeen
A Bulawayo-based police officer has been fined after locking her colleagues inside her shebeen.
Modester Nyambe, 31, reportedly locked them up to stop them from confiscating her alcohol which was being sold illegally in the city centre.
Incident at the City-Centre Shebeen
Nyambe appeared before Bulawayo Provincial Magistrate Isheunesu Mathoba for sentencing on a charge of obstructing or defeating the course of justice.
The incident occurred on 30 December last year, shortly after 3 PM.
According to court testimony, Assistant Inspector Lloyd Mazura and his team arrived at a city-centre building following a tip-off about illegal alcohol sales.
They found a man, identified as Dodsway Mutsungi, selling alcohol. He told officers that he was an employee and that the shebeen belonged to Nyambe.
Mazura said the employee called Nyambe on her mobile phone, and she arrived at the scene wearing a police uniform. She reportedly tried to reason with the officers to prevent the seizure of alcohol, but her requests were refused.
Officer Prevents Seizure of US$5,000 Worth of Alcohol
During the confrontation, Nyambe reportedly grabbed the keys to the shebeen, ran out of the room, and locked the officers inside, preventing them from confiscating alcohol valued at US$5,000.
“We had to call the officer-in-charge, who then dispatched a Support Unit team to open the door,” Mazura told the court.
Magistrate Criticizes Abuse of Office
Magistrate Mathoba ordered Nyambe to pay a US$300 fine by 28 February or face six months in prison. Nyambe was represented by her lawyer, Toboka Nyathi.
“The offender obstructed the course of justice when she prevented police officers who were carrying out their official duties.
She abused her office by blocking officers and the moral blameworthiness is high because, as an officer, she was supposed to comply but did the opposite and locked them inside,” Mathoba said.
