Ex-SA Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa Found Dead In France
Former South African Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has died after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Paris on Tuesday, 30 September 2025. He was serving as South Africa’s Ambassador to France at the time of his death. French police say investigations are ongoing.
A sudden fall in Paris
According to Kaya News, Mthethwa was found dead after plunging from the 22nd floor of a hotel in the French capital.
Kaya News reported:
“BREAKING NEWS: South African Ambassador to France and former Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has died after falling from the 22nd floor of a Paris hotel. French police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.”
Local outlet Le Parisien stated that his wife had raised the alarm after receiving a troubling message.
Le Parisien reported:
“The disappearance of Mthethwa was reported by his wife, who indicated having received a worrying message from him in the evening.”
French police investigation
French media reports say his body was discovered outside the Hyatt Hotel in the Porte Maillot area of western Paris. Officials said his hotel room window had been forced open.
Reuters quoted a police spokesperson who confirmed the death but declined to give details.
“The investigation is ongoing. At this stage, no conclusions can be made,” the spokesperson told Reuters.
According to The Sun, his phone was last traced near the Bois de Boulogne on Monday, 29 September, before his disappearance was reported. By the following day, his body was discovered at the hotel grounds.
The French authorities have not ruled out any possibility. Whether the fall was accidental, intentional or linked to foul play is still under investigation.
A long political career
Mthethwa was a senior figure in the African National Congress. He served as Minister of Police between 2009 and 2014, before becoming Minister of Arts and Culture.
In 2024, he was appointed as South Africa’s Ambassador to France, a position he held until his death on 30 September 2025.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation in South Africa said in a statement carried by Polity:
“We are aware of unfortunate reports pertaining to Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa. Further details will be communicated after official confirmation.”
